Kult Koruth brings together two distinctive figures of Prague underground. Anna Ruth is a visual artist who also DJs and performs live as Koruth, while the modular synth player Michael Nechvátal has garnered attention under the moniker Kult masek as well as part of the merry krautrockers Raw Deal and the drone/noise duo Jasnovidec. This recording, their first together after a number of well-received concerts, presents selected and edited jams. Nechvátal’s modular syntesizer is complemented by Ruth’s vocals, loopers and concrete sounds.

There is a sense of immediacy and openness in these tracks. The exact sequences of sounds may never be repeated, yet the duo manage to avoid the vagueness and lack of personality that sometimes plague improvised music. Each track offers a brief excursion into a different, fully realised world; but while the tendency in ambient and drone music is towards sprawling soundscapes, Kult Koruth never leave the imaginary undergrowth. Listening to Rotten Swamp or Pearl Hunters means engaging in observation at ground level, on a micro scale. The shift in perspective is key here.

Shuffling synth loops create a kaleidoscopic effect of constantly changing views that are firmly grounded in the material by the barely processed creaks and hisses emerging when a microphone touches various surfaces. The vocals are wordless, often disembodied by the processing, lost between the sometimes bubbling, sometimes thrumming, sometimes organ- or guitar-like synths. This is a music that operates on the edge between abstraction and storytelling.
